What I Needed Most as a Springfield Mom
Let me tell you what nobody told me when I became a mom.
I didn't need another parenting philosophy. I didn't need a 400-page book about sleep training or a lecture about screen time from someone who'd never been trapped in a minivan with six kids for a 20-minute drive.
I needed practical stuff.
I Needed Somewhere to GO
When you have six kids, “let's get out of the house” is a whole production. Snacks packed, shoes found (never all of them), somebody's crying because they wanted the blue cup. And then you get out the door and realize… you have no idea where to go.
I needed someone to just TELL me: this park is good for toddlers. This one has shade. The library has storytime on Tuesdays. The Nature Center is free and the trails are stroller-friendly. Not a vague “get outside more!” — actual places, actual addresses, actual details.
That's not lazy. That's a mom trying to make the day work.
I Needed Affordable Fun
Everything costs money now. The zoo, the movies, the trampoline park — I love those places, but I can't take six kids there every weekend. I needed a list of things that were FREE. Parks, splash pads, library programs, the Art Museum (did you know it's always free? I didn't, for way too long).
Free family fun isn't a consolation prize. Some of our best days have cost exactly zero dollars.
I Needed Mom Friends Who Get It
Not mom friends who judge. Mom friends who get it.
Who understand that sometimes the win for the day is that everyone ate and nobody bled. Who won't blink when you show up 20 minutes late with one kid still in pajamas. Who know what it's like to love your kids fiercely and still need to lock yourself in the bathroom for three minutes of quiet.
Those friends are out there in the 417. But finding them? That's the hard part.
I Needed Resources in ONE Place
Food pantries. Clothing closets. School supply help. Kids-eat-free nights. Weekend events. Free activities. Back-to-school resources.
All of this EXISTS in Springfield. It's all real. But it's scattered across a dozen Facebook pages, half-remembered conversations, and websites that haven't been updated since 2019. When you're already overwhelmed, digging through all that feels impossible.
I needed one place. One trustworthy place. One mom saying “here, I already looked it up for you.”
So I Built It
That's why The 417 Mom exists.
I'm not a parenting expert. I'm a mom of six in the Springfield/Nixa area who got tired of Googling “things to do with kids near me” every Saturday morning. I started digging — real parks, real events, real pantries, real resources — and I decided to put it all in one place so no other mom has to start from scratch.
This blog is the thing I needed. And if you needed it too? Then welcome. You're exactly who it's for.
Let's figure out this 417 mom life together. 💛
