November in the 417 Without the Scramble: 7 Family Dates to Put on the Calendar This Week
November in the 417 Without the Scramble: 7 Family Dates to Put on the Calendar This Week
Halloween week is not even over yet, and November is already coming in hot. As a mom of six here in the 417, I have learned that November does not sneak up on you — it ambushes you. One minute you are sorting candy, the next every free Santa photo, parade and craft fair is on the same Saturday and you missed the one you wanted. So this year I sat down this week and put these seven dates on the calendar NOW. Most are free, a couple are planned splurges, and all of them are easier if you claim the date before your weekends fill up.

1. Sea of Lights at Wonders of Wildlife — Opens Sunday, November 1
Put it on the calendar: The Sea of Lights Enchanted Christmas display at Wonders of Wildlife, 500 W. Sunshine St. in Springfield, runs November 1, 2026 through January 31, 2027, and it is included with general admission and membership, per the Springfield Convention & Visitors Bureau holiday guide. The whole aquarium turns into a glowing holiday walk with lights, festive sounds and multimedia displays.
Honest take: Who it's for: members — for you this is basically a free add-on, so go early before the December crowds. Paying full admission just for this? Do the math honestly: it is a beautiful splurge, not a budget outing. Watch-out: it runs to the end of January, so there is zero reason to fight the busiest weekends.
2. Nixa Veterans Day Ceremony — Saturday, November 7, 9 a.m.
Put it on the calendar: Nixa Parks and Recreation holds its Veterans Day ceremony at 9 a.m. on Saturday, November 7 at the Veterans Memorial in front of The X Center, according to the Christian County Headliner community calendar. Light refreshments are served, and if the weather turns, the ceremony moves indoors.
Honest take: Best for: any family who wants Veterans Day to mean something more than a day off a calendar. It is short, local and kid-manageable — you can be there, be respectful, talk about it on the drive home, and still have your whole Saturday. Pros: free and close to home for Christian County families. Cons: 9 a.m. on a Saturday is real, so set the clothes out Friday night.
3. Bass Pro Santa's Wonderland — Opens Saturday, November 7
Put it on the calendar: Santa's Wonderland at the original Bass Pro Shops in Springfield, 1 Bass Pro Dr., runs November 7 through December 24, 2026, per the Springfield CVB holiday guide — with a free photo with Santa and free activities for kids around Santa's Workshop.
Honest take: Who it's for: literally every 417 parent of a little one, because a free Santa photo is a free Santa photo. My honest advice: go in November, ideally on a weekday or early in the day. The same visit that is calm and sweet on November 10 can be a very long line by mid-December. Watch-out: the photo is free, the giant store full of things your kids will point at is very much not — set the expectation before you walk in.

4. NUTCRACKER! Magical Christmas Ballet at the Gillioz — Friday, November 13, 6 p.m.
Put it on the calendar: This one is a single night only: 6 p.m. on Friday, November 13 at the Gillioz Theatre, 325 Park Central E in Springfield, per the Springfield CVB holiday guide. It is the touring production with an international cast, big costumes and puppets — the fancy version, not a local recital.
Honest take: Best for: a special-night outing with an older kid who loves dance or getting dressed up — or a mom's night you actually plan. Pros: one date makes the decision easy. Cons: it is ticketed and one night only, so buy tickets when you calendar it, not the week of. This is the splurge slot on my list, and I am calling it that on purpose.
5. Ozark Craft Festival — Friday, November 13 & Saturday, November 14
Put it on the calendar: The Cosmopolitan Club of Ozark holds the Ozark Craft Festival at the Ozark Community Center from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Friday, November 13 and 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, November 14, per the Christian County Headliner community calendar.
Honest take: Who it's for: anyone who wants gifts that are not the same three things everyone else bought online — this is where the good teacher and neighbor gifts live. Pros: you shop local Christian County makers instead of a warehouse. Watch-out: bring a list and a budget, because "just looking" is a strategy, not a guarantee.
6. FEZtival of Trees at the Shrine Mosque — November 20–22
Put it on the calendar: The FEZtival of Trees runs November 20–22, 2026 at the Abou Ben Adhem Shrine Mosque, 601 E. St. Louis St. in Springfield, per the Springfield CVB holiday guide. Local businesses donate dozens of fully decorated Christmas trees — with unwrapped presents under them — that are raffled off, and there are Santa visits, vendors and live entertainment.
Honest take: Best for: families who love the looking as much as the winning — a hall of themed trees is a whole holiday outing by itself, and great inspiration for your own decorating. Pros: it lands the weekend BEFORE Thanksgiving, so it kicks off the season without stealing your holiday week. Watch-out: raffle tickets add up quietly — decide your number before you go in.
7. Ozark Christmas Parade & Santa Village — Saturday, November 21
Put it on the calendar: The Ozark Chamber of Commerce holds the 61st annual Ozark Christmas Parade on Saturday, November 21, per the Christian County Headliner community calendar. The event runs 2 to 7:30 p.m., with Santa Village on the Square and Santa in the Gazebo from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m., and the parade itself begins at 5:30 p.m.
Honest take: Who it's for: everyone, but especially families who like a parade that is an afternoon, not just a line of cars. Go early for Santa Village and the Gazebo visit, then stay for the parade as it gets dark — that order matters, because Santa's window closes right when the parade starts. Pros: a small-town Christmas parade is peak 417, and this one is Christian County close. Cons: it is late November in Missouri — coats, hats and a blanket for the curb are not optional.
One Last Honest Note
Event details can change, especially outdoor plans in Missouri weather, so double-check the host's page the week of anything you pick — the Springfield Convention & Visitors Bureau holiday guide and the Christian County Headliner community calendar are the two sources I built this list from. You do not have to do all seven. Pick two or three that fit YOUR family's ages, budget and energy, put them on the calendar this week, and let the rest be a bonus.
That is the whole trick, mamas: November is a lovely month in the 417 if you meet it with a calendar instead of a scramble. Claim your dates now, and I will see you out there — probably in the Santa line, holding someone's coat. 💛
