Nixa Family Guide: Parks, Events & Kid Favorites
I live in the Nixa area, so I can say this with authority: Nixa is a fantastic place to raise kids. It's got that small-town feel with genuinely great parks, a wonderful library, and community events that make you feel like you actually know your neighbors. Here's my local's guide.
Parks
McCauley Park — 701 N Taylor Way
This is THE Nixa park — 40 acres of green space with a splash pad (free!), a disc golf course (also free!), and a newly built inclusive playground designed for kids of all abilities. There's always something going on here, and it's my go-to answer for "where should we go today?"
The X Center / Nixa Community Center — 701 N Taylor Way
Right next to McCauley Park, this is Nixa Parks & Rec headquarters — gym, fitness areas, youth sports, after-school programs, and summer day camps. If your kids are into organized activities, start here: nixaparks.com.
The Library
Christian County Library — Nixa Branch — 208 N McCroskey St
A beautiful branch with storytimes, kids' craft programs, summer reading, and special events like zoo visits and fire truck days. The Friends of the Library book sales here are incredible — kids' hardcovers for $1, and bag day fills a whole grocery bag for $3. Free books, mamas. FREE.
Events Worth Planning Around
Sucker Days (May, downtown Nixa)
The 68th annual festival just happened this past May — this is Nixa's signature event, and it's wonderfully weird in the best way. A parade, 100+ craft vendors, kids' rides, live music, and the famous fried sucker fish tasting. Admission is free. Yes, there's an actual fish fry. Yes, it's a whole thing. Go at least once.
Nixa Multicultural Festival (early June, downtown)
Another free community favorite with food, performances, and activities celebrating the cultures in our community.
Movies in the Park (summer, McCauley Park)
Free outdoor movies on summer evenings. Bring blankets, bring snacks, let the kids run around on the playground until the movie starts. This is peak summer parenting.
Nixa Area Farmers Market (Saturdays, in season)
Fresh produce, local vendors, and a lovely Saturday morning outing. My kids love the samples.
Where to Eat
14 Mill Market — downtown Main Street
A food hall, which is GENIUS with kids because everyone can pick their own food and you only have to sit at one table. Casual, all-ages, and there's often live music on the patio.
Century Lanes — 855 W Tracker Rd
Bowling + arcade + pizza = the holy trinity of kid entertainment. Great for rainy days and birthday parties.
Why I Love Nixa
It's close enough to Springfield for everything (zoo, museums, all of it), but it has its own little world of parks, events, and people who wave at you. If you're a 417 mom looking for community, Nixa delivers.
See you at the splash pad! 💛
